I’ll never forget that night. It was bedtime and pure pandemonium. We were all in the mix, giggling and having fun—me, one six-year-old, and four-year-old twins—but as the party raged (and the clock ticked) on, I was becoming more anxious. I knew I needed a break. That was when I disappeared—into the bathroom.
Once I took a few deep breaths, I was ready for battle. I didn’t plan to pop out of the bathroom as Mrs. Gourd, but the moment I swung open the bathroom door, I knew I could have a little fun. After calling the room to attention in my home-grown “British’ish” accent, I began to read our bedtime stories.
My stop-and-scold, silly approach to reading their books was fun for everyone, and before I knew it, all three were fast asleep. Mrs. Gourd did the trick.
To my surprise, guess who the kids begged to come for another visit? Mrs. Gourd. Night after night, Mrs. Gourd would show up for story time, and nieces and nephews began asking for her, too.
Over the years, Mrs. Gourd has inspired others to create their own Mrs. (and Mr.!) Gourd. I hope it does the same for you.
I had a teacher say, “How long a minute feels like depends on what side of the bathroom door you’re on.” No matter how crazy your bedtime might be, I dare say they can both be as wonderful.
